Portland’s new “Street Seats” Pilot, we’re loving it.

Giving a big thumbs up on Portland’s new “Street Seats” Pilot program for reclaiming community space. On a recent ride through the wonderful Mississippi Neighborhood I came upon a convenient seating patio area outside of a local pizza shop. Not blocking the sidewalk, but rather designed to fit in to an adjacent parking space. Brilliant! New York- we are trying to catch up with you, Europe… , well at least we are trying. This photo is not the Mississippi location, but one of a few designs.

Bikes Aren’t Just Good For You, They’re Good For The Economy, Too

Check out this great piece on cycling economy from Co.EXIST!

The information in this hand graphic makes it clear that spending money on bike infrastructure can have far-reaching positive economic impacts.  By now, we all know that cycling is good for health, fitness, cutting road accidents, reducing carbon emissions, and increasing energy security (and so on, and on). But what about biking’s economic impact–its cyclonomics, if you will?

Oregon Manifest Book Highlights Bike Design Challenge

OREGON MANIFEST
ANNOUNCING THE OREGON MANIFEST BOOK!
Experience the energy and excitement of the 2011 Constructor’s Design Challenge in our new book, BIKE CRAFT, DESIGN, INNOVATION.  Featuring imagery of each entry bike, the Creative Collaboration bikes, the Oregon Manifest Field Test and interviews with the winners and judges, this little book captures the breadth and spirit of the ground-breaking event in one nicely designed package.

More than a document of the competition, it’s a fantastic survey of what happens when independent craftsmen, designers and students outside of the larger bike industry work to create a better bike for the everyday rider.

HAVE YOU MET THE FARADAY?
We’re deliriously excited to note that one of the Oregon Manifest Creative Collaboration bikes – designed by IDEO and Paul Sadoff of  Rock Lobster Bicycles – is going to market.  This gorgeously and cleverly designed e-bike is the first Constructor’s Design Challenge rig to go into mass production.  Melding future-thinking design and function with a thoroughly classic style, the Faraday Porteur has redefined what an e-bike could and should be.  Admire it here.

Travel Oregon Wins Back-to-Back National Award
Official State Visitor Guide Recognized as Best in the Country

Salem, Ore. – Sept. 5, 2012 – The National Council of State Tourism Directors (NCSTD) last week honored Travel Oregon with a Mercury Award naming its Print Visitor Guide the best in the country for the second consecutive year.”Travel Oregon strives to provide meaningful content to potential visitors looking for authentic travel experiences” said Kevin Wright, Vice President of Global Marketing at Travel Oregon. “Bringing home the top U.S. award for our visitor guide for the second year in a row is particularly significant to us as it supports our research, which shows our inspirational trip-planning content resonates with consumers.”

Travel Oregon’s Official Visitor Guide provides travelers with details on outdoor recreation, food and drink, culture and heritage, regional travel suggestions and “Local’s Picks” that highlight lesser-known must-see destinations. The guide serves as the companion piece to other communication vehicles, such as TravelOregon.com and E-Newsletters that focus on general travel, the culinary scene and outdoor adventure in the state. The guide, published by MEDIAmerica, has a circulation of 300,000 and is produced annually.

This marks the eleventh Mercury Award presented to Travel Oregon in the past eleven years. Last year, in addition to winning Best State Tourism Print Visitor Guide, Travel Oregon brought home awards for Best Tourism Interactive Marketing and Best State International Marketing for the first Oregon/Portland Korean Visitors Guide.

With its Mercury Awards, the U.S. Travel Association (U.S. Travel) recognizes state and territory tourism offices for excellence and creative accomplishment in travel marketing and promotion. Winning programs serve as models to foster imagination and innovation in the development of future destination programs.

Romantic couple leaves on ride, returns engaged!

Congratulations to Stephan Hall and Kelly Greengard who got engaged last week on a sunny afternoon bike ride. What a perfect way to pop the question, and to start an adventure together for the rest of their lives. Just check out those smiling faces- we wish you the best of luck and love. It seems that more and more people are integrating bikes in to their romantic lives, as we have more wedding rides and reception cruises this year.  I have to say, one of the best parts about working at the bike shop is meeting all the fun people with interesting stories of adventure and excitement.

Congrats!

Reveal The Path Trailer

About the Movie:

Reveal the Path is a genre-defying adventure film that contemplates what it means to live an inspired life using the bicycle as a mechanism to explore, dream and discover.

Regions explored include Scotland’s lush valleys, Europe’s snow capped mountains, Morocco’s high desert landscapes, Nepal’s rural countryside and Alaska’s rugged coastal beaches. Ride along and get lost in the wonders of the world… Meet the locals living modest yet seemingly fulfilling lives, leading us to question what it means to live an inspired life – however humble or extravagant. Filmed across four continents and featuring Tour Divide race legends, Matthew Lee & Kurt Refsnider, this immersive film is sure to ignite the dream in you.

Join in as the creators of Ride the Divide take you on an adventure that will leave you with an eager desire to chart your own course to far away lands or simply to discover with eyes wide open what’s right around the bend.

Special Guests:

Filmakers will be in attendance and live music from soundtrack artist Dominique Fraissard
